Spring Road Trip: Food and Beer in Central PA

By: Mary Miller

As the weather warms, birds return and crocuses bloom, it’s a great time to venture back outdoors. On Saturday, April 9, walk out the front door, get in the car and drive over to PA Flavor: A Celebration of Food & Beer, which is being held from 1 – 5 pm on the 9th in the Main Hall of the Pennsylvania Farm Show Arena in Harrisburg. Tickets are available locally at The Church Brew Works and online at www.GreenbeltEvents.com.  Savor terrific beer from Pennsylvania breweries and eat your way around the exhibit hall, tasting specialties from Pennsylvania restaurants. If you’re too full or sleepy to drive home, I recommend staying at The Inn at Westwynd Farm in nearby Hummelstown. Owners Frank and Carolyn Troxell provide all of the cookies and coffee you’ll need to clear up any fogginess from your beer-fest. Then wake up to Carolyn’s heavenly breakfasts before driving back to Pittsburgh. If you can get to Harrisburg just a little before the PA Flavor doors open, stop at The Midtown Scholar Bookstore for some of the best tea and coffee drinks in the area, and then peruse their amazing selection of used, rare and reduced price books. I’ve found some true cookbook treasures here.
