The Brazen Kitchen: Healthy Food with an Attitude

The Brazen Kitchen Launches!
Serves up an edgy (and thoughtful) take on healthy food

Martha just did it. Oprah did it for a week. Bill Clinton is doing it. Natalie has been doing it for a long time.

Yep. Going vegan. It’s going more mainstream. So much so that Businessweek and the Wall Street Journal are taking notice. And with athletes like Brendan Brazier, Scott Jurek and….Mike Tyson going vegan, gone are the days of the Teva-wearing caricature. Even Pittsburgh’s own Steeler, LaMarr Woodley, has a PSA for the Physician’s Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) one of the leading advocacy groups for plant-based diets.

“I am tired of the perception that healthy food equals cardboard,” says Leah Shannon, our very own BizChick, who launched www.brazenkitchen.com this week. “My vision for Brazen Kitchen is to show that plant-based food can be just as pleasurable and sexy as any meat-centric kind. And not only is it good, it will also make you feel phenomenal.”

Brazen Kitchen is Pittsburgh’s first resource on being vegan in the city (and beyond) – and this is just fitting with the city’s leadership in sustainability and green living. “There are such great options here in the city! Last week, I just had a “Spicy Vegan” at Tamari in Lawrenceville and it was amazing.” And this is a growing trend – restaurants are serving more and more vegetarian and vegan fare. “Greens are the new black! It’s a trend that’s here to stay.”

Brazen Kitchen is also one of the first websites that takes a “food with attitude” look at healthy eating. It follows the footsteps of The Skinny Bitch series that has seen great success. “The perception that the spectrum of plant-based, “health food” only spans grilled vegetables with hummus on one end and on the other, Bragg’s-laced brown rice topped with tofu and sprouts is going to get thrown out the window.” With recipes like a hack on the classic Mac and Cheese and a decadent Raspberry Cheesecake with Chocolate Ganache, the site will open doors to a new frontier of food.

“When you visit the site, you’ll see that there’s nothing mellow about it. It packs a punch and has flavor – just like the food! I want people to see the possibilities.”

A graduate of Carnegie Mellon University’s Heinz School of Public Policy, Leah is also going to serve up commentary on food policy and politics. “My other objective is to provide a forum for advocacy for food access, sustainability and safety issues. And of course, because food and health are invariably connected, the site will be a great resource for those who are looking to focus on leading healthier lives.”

Brazen Kitchen can be found at www.brazenkitchen.com and will feature recipes, resources, articles and videos on all things food.
