5 Ways to Improve Your Mental Fitness

By: Julia Slovich

We all have days when we feel like our heads are going to explode. We feel tired, stressed, fatigued, as well as a range of other emotions. In order to keep your brain fresh and ready for any new challenges or situations, you need to keep it healthy. Here are some ways that you can keep your mind limber and fit.

1. Learn to relax
We find it hard to turn our brains off. We are always thinking about what we have to do tomorrow, the difficult conversation we had with a coworker, or stressing out about the family reunion that’s coming up. Your mind can become exhausted and unable to function at peak performance. Allow yourself to forget about reality for a while. Read a good book, engross yourself in a movie, do yoga, or take a walk. The basic rule of thumb is to do something that’s enjoyable and soothing. During this time, your mind will have time to rejuvenate.

2. Eat properly
What we eat in our usual diet has a correlation with how we tend to feel about life. If you eat a lot of junk foods you probably feel “down” more often than people who are eating more healthfully. In order to feel mentally positive, make sure you are getting your fruits, vegetables, and protein and limit your intake of sugar, fat, and salt.

3. Learn to say “No”
We don’t like to turn people down or feel like we disappointed them, so most of us usually say “yes” when we are asked to do things. However, never saying “no” is one of the leading causes of burn-outs. When we take more and more on, we feel like we are hamsters running on a spinning wheel – we are working fast and furiously, but getting nowhere. In order to improve your mental fitness, learn to turn people down. Don’t feel like you immediately have to answer when someone asks for your help. Tell them you will take a look at your calendar and then get back to them with your answer.

4. Don’t procrastinate
Procrastination leads to stress and negativity, neither of which are good for your mental health! Get into the habit of doing things now. Getting work done ahead of time boosts your sense of accomplishment and feels very rewarding.

5. Get enough sleep
Getting enough sleep doesn’t necessarily mean getting 7 to 9 hours of sleep per night. If those hours are spent in a restless state, you may as well have been wide awake. Not everyone needs the same amount of sleep to feel rested and energized. Make sure you are getting enough hours every night to feel revived the next morning. If your sleep is always restless, talk to your doctor.

Mental fitness is just as important as physical fitness. If your mind is too stressed or negative, it can lead to neglect and unhealthiness in other parts of your life. When your mind is racing and you can’t catch a breath, remember these tips, implement them, and get your mind back in shape.
