STACY MATHISON
& THE CITY THEATRE
*****************************

stacy mathison

Who doesn't love the City Theatre!?  Well, Stacy Mathison is a person behind the scenes at the City Theatre making the experience memorable, inviting and oh so much fun!  I've never seen Stacy without a smile  ~ how do you do it?!  Chicks have had a number of outings at the City Theatre and we can't wait for the opportunity to partner again ~~ thanks Stacy!  So let's take a moment to see what's up in her world ~~

Stacy is excited to begin her third season at the City Theatre in the South Side.  She takes pride in being part of a theatre that sets out to produce new works.

Stacy grew up in the town of Mars, PA and has lived most of her life in the Pittsburgh area.  After living in Baltimore, MD for a couple of years, she realized how much she missed her home town!  Upon her return she soon sought out City Theatre as the place to use her positive energy.  After only one month of volunteer work, Stacy was placed on staff as the Group Sales Manager and is now a full time member of City Theatre where she coordinates group sales, special events, space rentals, the Cast of Caterers, and some of the media/press tasks.

Stacy received her B.A. in Communications from the University of Pittsburgh. She is also planning to spend a year abroad for the organization WorldTeach.

City Theatre's upcoming 2008 - 2009 season will showcase great new plays.   Kicking off the season is a commissioned two-person musical titled Long Story Short. GrooveLily bandmates and married couple Brendan Milburn & Valerie Vigoda set this love story to a hip contemporary score in this musical romance which follows the pair from first kiss, through a lifelong relationship, to a surprising finale.

Later in the season is The Seafarer by Conor McPherson which earned rave reviews during its run on Broadway. The New York Times called it a thinking-person's alternative to It's a Wonderful Life. These are only two of the 6 productions that will make up the new season.

INDEPENDENT CONTRACTORS VERSUS EMPLOYEES
*****************************

In today's workplace, there is an ever-increasing trend for employers to consider filling vacancies with independent contractors as opposed to committing to a full time employee.  A maze of regualtions exist that may or may not make this question easy to answer.
And in trying,  many employers find themselves asking:

Can I hold the contractor to the same employment standards as an employee?

Can the contractor supervise employees that I currently employ?

Can I require the contractor to have an exclusive relationship with my company?

Can I pay contractors an hourly rate or do I pay them per project?

Can I offer benefits to the contractor for the contract period?

Can I save money long term by using only independent contractors?

There are advantages and disadvantages to the independent contractor relationship and, as an employer it is critical to know the difference and manage the person in direct relation to their status with your company.

This important seminar outlines the pros and cons of completing your workforce with employees and independent contractors and will be beneficial to you in acquiring the knowledge to stay in check with the guidelines.

SPOTLIGHT ON
ALLISON JONES
*******************
allison jones
I'm a passionate interior designer who found her calling a little too late to make it a first career.  I hope someday it will be my third career!  My first career was as a high school music teacher and musical director.  I met my husband when we both sang in the Bach Choir of Pittsburgh and our current musical outlet is through the St. Bede Church Choir.  But then I found my second (and present) career in the nonprofit sector.

I am the director of a program called Boards-by-Design at Duquesne University.  Boards-by-Design helps local nonprofits find new board members.  On the flip side, we help individuals who want to serve on a nonprofit board find just the right board on which to serve.  We work with over 300 nonprofit organizations in the Pittsburgh region and have made over 600 board placements in the past 6 years!

This is a very exciting time at Boards-by-Design, as we are getting ready to launch a new model of board matching.  We are going to be working more closely with employers to place their employees on nonprofit boards.  By serving on a nonprofit board, an individual can increase his/her personal and professional networks, enhance leadership skills, improve the overall quality of life in the community, and help enhance his/her company's reputation as a good corporate citizen.
But most importantly, you can spend your time contributing to a cause you are passionate about.

If you are interested in serving on a nonprofit board and would like more information, please visit our website at www.nli.duq.edu

Message from

Deputy Director
Office of Community Relations
Allegheny County
Department of Human
Services

The Department of Human Services is hosting a unique fundraiser, Candidates' Comedy Night in collaboration with the Allegheny County Music Festival Committee.  This new fundraiser is planned to raise additional revenue for the Music Festival Fund.  The Fund benefits children and youth served by DHS through provider agencies.   We need your support for this fundraiser to be a sell-out.

The event, scheduled for Wednesday, August 20, 2008 at the Improv located at 166 E. Bridge Street, Homestead, PA 15120 (Waterfront), will feature candidates running for statewide political office in the upcoming November general election.  The candidates will come prepared with two minutes of material.  Their participation will be a rare political win-win.  The candidates will benefit from their willingness to be off-message while performing for an audience of politically savvy community leaders.  In doing so, DHS will raise much needed funds to assist vulnerable children in Allegheny County.

Gene Collier, columnist with the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and professional stand-up comedian, will emcee the event.  Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. with the program beginning promptly at 7:30 pm.

Special guests:  Governor Edward Rendell, County Executive Dan Onorato and Mayor Luke Ravenstahl have confirmed their attendance and will also perform.

Remaining sections of eight (8) seats for $500 are still available.
The $1000 Platinum Seating and $750 Gold Seating are already sold out.

Please consider supporting this worthy endeavor by contacting Ondr=E9a L. Burton at 412-350-3683 or via email at Ondrea.Burton@AlleghenyCounty.US
